How to Teach your Child Proper Brushing and Flossing Techniques

One of our most important responsibilities as parents is teaching our children good oral hygiene habits. Proper brushing and flossing are the cornerstones of a healthy smile. Here are our top 5 ways to teach effective techniques to make sure your child's teeth stay bright and strong.

Start Early:

Teaching your child to brush and floss correctly is a gift that keeps on giving. It not only protects their teeth and gums but also sets them up for a lifetime of good oral health.

Oral hygiene should begin as soon as your child's first tooth emerges. Initially, you can use a soft, damp cloth or a toothbrush designed for infants to gently clean their gums and teeth.

Choose the Right Tools:

When your child is old enough to hold a toothbrush, choose one with soft bristles and a small head. There are many fun, colorful toothbrushes available that can make brushing more appealing.

Use a fluoride toothpaste specifically formulated for children. A pea-sized amount is enough for kids under six years old to prevent them from swallowing too much fluoride.

Proper Brushing Technique:

Show your child how to brush by setting a good example. Brush your teeth together, and make it a fun, bonding experience.

Teach your child to hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and use gentle circular motions. Ensure they brush all surfaces of their teeth – front, back, and chewing surfaces.

Encourage your child to brush for at least two minutes. You can use a timer or play their favorite song to make it more enjoyable.

Gentle Flossing:

Flossing becomes necessary when your child's teeth start to touch, usually around age two or three. Initially, you'll need to help them with this task.

Floss picks can be easier for children to handle than traditional dental floss. Show them how to gently slide the floss between their teeth and curve it around each tooth's base.

Supervision and Routine:

Until your child is around seven or eight years old, it's a good idea to supervise their brushing and flossing to ensure they're doing it correctly.

Establish a consistent routine for brushing and flossing. Make it part of their morning and bedtime rituals.
